As Douglas Adams famously wrote, 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Well, today I turn 42, and I can confidently say that while I may have the answer, I still have no idea what the question is.
On this milestone birthday, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind of a year it's been. It's amazing how much can change in 366 days (don’t sleep on leap years). Taking stock of the past year is a powerful exercise in gratitude and perspective, and something I encourage you to do at least yearly. So, let me share some highlights:
- I took a leap of faith and quit my job at Amazon after 18 years to pursue content creation full-time. It's been equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, and looking back on it I probably should have done it sooner.
- My wife and I welcomed our second child into the world. Nothing says "I'm ready for a challenge" quite like deciding to juggle a career change and a newborn simultaneously. Sleep is for the weak. I realize now that I’m very, very weak.
- I've hired some full-time staff and built out a new video studio. It turns out that talking to yourself in an empty room is frowned upon, but if you call it a "studio" and add some lights, it becomes a legitimate business.
- I've deepened connections with friends and family, realizing that my support network is stronger than I ever knew. It's heartwarming to know that so many people have my back.
- I've learned new skills and pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
- I've had the opportunity to impact people's lives through my content, receiving messages that remind me why I do what I do.
As I look forward to this new year of life, I'm excited about:
- Creating more content and reaching even more people. My goal is to make at least one person snort coffee through their nose while watching my videos. Maybe it’s time to bring back the wigs?
- The fact that 42 is not a prime number, but 43 is. This means I have a whole year to prepare for my prime time (I’m still working on those dad jokes).
- Releasing a project I've been working on for the last six months. I can't wait to share it with you all.
- Watching my children grow and helping shape their worldview. I'm particularly looking forward to explaining to them why Dad spends so much time talking to a camera.
- Traveling to new places and experiencing different cultures now that I truly have unlimited vacation time.
- Continuing to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. I know for a fact that when I write this email next year there will be a ton of surprises.
I'm filled with gratitude for all of you who've been part of this journey. You are appreciated.
